ENDOMETRIOSIS AND ADENOMYOSIS TREATMENTS

Contributing to the cause of about 20 to 40% of overall subfertility cases in women, endometriosis is one of the major disorders affecting female fertility. The condition of endometriosis occurs when the tissues forming the uterine lining or endometrium starts growing outside the uterine cavity rather than inside it. They tend to spread over to the ovaries and the associated organs in the pelvic area.

These tissues are affected by hormonal cycles and tend to grow, thicken and shed. The shed tissues are trapped inside the pelvis and cause irritations, scarring, adhesions and painful periods along with subfertility issues. Endometriosis varies in type as minimal, mild, moderate or severe based on the location, size and intensity of endometrial spread & is characterised by pelvic pain.

ENDOMETRIOSIS AND ADENOMYOSIS TREATMENTS

Other symptoms of the condition include painful periods, cramps in the lower abdomen or back pain during the period of menstruation, discomfort during bowel movements and so on. In mild cases of endometriosis, no symptoms are felt initially, though they might hinder fertility.

Adenomyosis is considered in close association with endometriosis. The condition involves the movement or encroachment of the endometrial tissues, lining the uterus into the uterus muscles. Adenomyosis has symptoms similar to endometriosis such as painful periods, pain during intercourse, heavy menstrual bleeding and so on. Although no definite cause for the condition is identified yet, Adenomyosis is attributed to be caused due to an increase in the level of oestrogen.

The diagnosis of these conditions is done by the doctor on the basis of a detailed analysis of the medical and familial history of the patient and a physical examination to assess the presence of abnormal growth. Transvaginal ultrasound is also helpful in identifying endometriosis. However, the minimally invasive technique of laparoscopy is considered the golden standard in the diagnosis of endometriosis.

Although a cure for endometriosis is questionable, with appropriate treatment, it is possible to relieve the pain and other discomforts associated with the condition. It is possible to manage the fertility issues caused by the condition to some extent as well. The management of endometriosis is possible with the help of pain medications, anti-inflammatory drugs and hormonal therapy.

However, from the point of subfertility treatment, endometriosis is managed with the help of conservative surgery techniques. The surgical procedures help in removing the endometrial growth without causing any harm to the reproductive organs.
